Task 3
Shot transitions – The opening of Thelma and Louise only use the simple transitions from a to b.
Fades – Although the example of this is only in the credits of Thelma and Louise it shows how fades may be used – as you can see the writing fades in and out again.
Shot reverse shot – Thelma and Louise use quite a lot of these shots in the opening 5 minutes but the first example is the conversation between the waitress (Louise) and the customers at about 30 seconds then follows into another between Louise and Thelma over the phone at 50 seconds. Another example of this would be the conversation between Thelma and her husband where you can clearly see she is trying to tell her husband that she’s going away but keeps changing her mind – the close ups of her face show this.
Tempo – The majority of the shots are quite long and slow moving as the camera often uses tracking shots with the main characters
Arranging the order of events – the opening sequence has the order of events in the natural order with no flash backs or flash forward so it’s not confusing and it’s got a natural flow to it.
Editing and timing – The opening sequence uses linear editing as it tells the story as it happens and nothings jumbled up.
Time and space – At about 1 minute 49 seconds the close up of Thelma helping her husband put on his watch draws attention to the detail without this shot you wouldn’t see how good she is to him and how much she helps by putting the watch on and also making sure he wasn’t late for work.
